Peter A
Chapter
1
Peter
an apostle of Jesus Christ to the chosen sojourners of the dispersion
in Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia and Bithunia, 2 according to the
foreknowledge of God the Father, in sanctification of spirit, to
obedience and sprinkling of the blood of Jesus Christ: Grace and
peace be multiplied to you.
3 Blessed be the God and Father of our
Lord Jesus Christ, the one who according to his great mercy has
regenerated us to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus
Christ from the dead, 4 to an inheritance that is incorruptible and
undefiled and unfading, that has been kept in heaven for you 5 who
are guarded by the power of God through faith to a salvation ready to
be revealed at the last time. 6 In which you exult, though for a
little while if necessary you may grieve in manifold trials, 7 in
order that the proving of your faith, much more precious than gold
that perishes, even though it is proved through fire, may be found to
praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ; 8 whom
you love without having seen, in whom though you do not see but
believe you exult with unspeakable and glorious joy, 9 obtaining the
end of your faith, the salvation of your souls. 10 Concerning which
salvation the prophets, who prophecied concerning the grace intended
for you, sought out and searched out, 11 searching for what, or what
sort of time, the Spirit of Christ fore-witnessing in them made clear
the sufferings of Christ and the glories after them; 12 to whom it
was revealed that they ministered these same things not to themselves
but to you, which now were announced to you through the ones who
evangelized you by the Holy Spirit sent forth from heaven, which
things the angels of heaven long to look into.
13 Wherefore
girding up the loins of your mind, being sober, perfectly hope on the
grace that will be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ.
14 As obedient children, not fashioning yourselves to your former
ignorant longings, 15 but also become holy yourselves in all your
conduct like the holy one who has called you, 16 because it is
written, “You shall be holy, because I am holy.” 17 And if you
invoke the Father who without respect to persons judges according to
each man's work, pass the time of your sojourning in fear, 18 knowing
that it was not with corruptible silver or gold that you were
redeemed from your vain conduct handed down from your fathers, 19 but
with the
precious blood of Christ as that of an unspotted and unblemished
lamb, 20 who was on one hand foreknown from the foundations of the
world, on the other manifested in the last times because of you 21
who through him believe in God who raised him from the dead and gave
him glory, so that your faith and hope would be in God. 22 Having
purified your souls by obedience to the truth unto unfeigned
brotherly love, love one another earnestly from the heart, 23 having
been regenerated not by corruptible seed but incorruptible, through
the living and remaining word of God. 24 Because all flesh is as
grass, and all of its glory as the flower of grass; the grass dried
and the flower fell out; 25 but the word of the Lord remains unto the
age. And this is the word preached as good news to
you.
Chapter
2
Therefore
putting away all malice and all guile and hypocrisies and envies and
all detractions, 2 desire the pure spiritual milk like newborn babes,
in order that by it you may grow to salvation, 3 if you tasted that
the Lord is good, 4 to whom you
are
approaching, a living stone, on one hand rejected by men, on the
other chosen by God, precious; 5 you also as living stones are being
built a spiritual house for a holy priesthood, to offer spiritual
sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ; 6 because it is
contained in scripture, “Behold I lay in Sion a chosen
precious corner foundation stone, and the one who believes on him
will by no means be shamed.” 7 Therefore it
is
precious to you who believe; but a stone which the builders rejected
to the unbelievers, this became the head of the corner 8 and a stone
of stumbling and a rock of offense; they stumbled at the word by
disobeying, 9 to which indeed they were appointed; but you are a
chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for
possession, so that you may tell out the virtues of the one who
called you out of darkness into his marvelous light; 10 who were not
a people, but are now a people of God, those who were not pitied, but
are now pitied.
11 Beloved, I exhort you as sojourners and aliens
to abstain from fleshly lust, which war against your soul; 12 having
your conduct good among the nations, in order that while they speak
against you as evildoers, by observing your good works they may
glorify God in the day of visitation.
13 Submit to every human
ordinance because of the Lord: whether to a king as being
supreme, 14 or to governors as being sent by him for vengeance on
evildoers but praise for well-doers; 15 because so is the will of
God, doing good to silence the foolish ignorance of men; 16 as free,
and not having freedom as a cloak of evil, but as slaves of God. 17
Honor all men, love the brotherhood, fear God, honor the king. 18
House servants, submit yourselves in all fear to your masters, not
only to the good and forbearing but also to the perverse. 19 For this
is favorable if anyone bears grief suffering unjustly because of
conscience of God. 20 For what glory is it if you endure buffeting
for sinning? But if you suffer for doing good, this is favorable
with God. 21 For you were called to this, because indeed Christ
suffered on your behalf, leaving behind an example to you in order
that you should follow in his steps; 22 who did not sin nor was guile
found in his mouth; 23 who when reviled did not revile in return,
suffered and did not threaten, but delivered himself to the one who
judges righteously; 24 who himself carried up our sins in his body
onto the tree, in order that dying to sins we might live to
righteousness; by whose bruise you were cured. 25 For you were as
wandering sheep, but now you turned to the shepherd and bishop of
your souls.
Chapter

Likewise
wives, submit yourselves to your own husbands, in order that even
if any disobey the word, through the conduct of the wives they may be
gained without a word, 2 observing your reverently pure conduct. 3 Of
whom let it not be the outward plaiting of hair and putting on gold
ornaments or of adorning with garments of clothing, 4 but in the
incorruptible adorning of the hidden heart of man of the meek and
quiet spirit, which is of great value before God. 5 For then indeed
so the holy women who hoped in God adorned themselves, submitting
themselves to their own husbands, 6 as Sara obeyed Abraham, calling
him lord; of whom you became children by
doing good and not fearing any terror. 7 Husbands likewise, dwelling
together with the female according to knowledge as with a weaker
vessel, assigning honor as co-heirs indeed of the grace of life, so
your prayers will not be hindered. 8 Now the conclusion: be all of
one mind, sympathetic, loving the brothers, compassionate,
humble-minded, not giving back evil instead of evil or reviling
instead of reviling, but on the contrary blessing, because you were
called to this in order that you might inherit blessing. 10 For the
one who wishes to love life and to see good days, let him restrain
his tongue from evil and his lips to not speak guile, 11 and let him
turn aside from evil and let him do good, let him seek peace and
pursue it; 12 because the eyes of the Lord are on the righteous and
his ears open to their petition, but the face of the Lord is against
those who do evil things.
13 And who is the one who will harm you
if you become zealots of the good? 14 But if you indeed suffer
because of righteousness, you are blessed. But do not fear their
terror nor be troubled, but sanctify Christ as Lord in your hearts,
always ready for defense to every one who asks you for a word
concerning the hope in you, 16 but with meekness and fear, having a
good conscience, in order that while you are spoken against the ones
who abuse you may be shamed by your good conduct in Christ. 17 For it
is better to suffer for doing good, if the will of God wills, than
for doing evil. 18 Because Christ indeed died once concerning sins, a
righteous man on behalf of unrighteous ones, in order that he might
bring you to God, on the one hand being put to death in the flesh, on
the other quickened in the spirit; 19 in which indeed he preached
when he went to the spirits in prison, 20 to those who were
disobedient then in the days of Noe when the longsuffering of God
waited while an ark was prepared, in which a few, this is eight
souls, were quite saved through water. 21 Which figure of baptism now
saves us also, not a putting away of the filth of the flesh but an
answer of a good conscience toward God, through the resurrection of
Jesus Christ, who is at the right hand of God, having gone into
heaven, angels and authorities and powers being subjected to
him.
Chapter
4
Therefore
you also arm yourselves with the same mind as Christ who suffered in
the flesh, because the one who has suffered in the flesh has ceased
from sin, 2 for the purpose of no longer living the time that remains
in the flesh in the lusts of men but in the will of God. 3 For
sufficient time has passed away to have worked out the purpose of the
nations, who have gone on in licentiousness, lusts, debaucheries,
carousals, drinking bouts and unlawful idolatries. 4 While they are
surprised at you not running with them to the same excess of
profligacy, blaspheming; 5 who will render account to the one who is
ready to judge living and dead. 6 For indeed good news was preached
for this, in order that they on one hand might be judged according to
men in the flesh, on the other might live according to God in the
spirit.
7 Now the end of all things has drawn near. Therefore be
sober-minded and be sober unto prayers; 8 before all things have
fervent love toward yourselves, because love covers a multitude of
sins; 9 be hospitable to one another without murmuring; 10 as each
one has received a gift, minister it to yourselves as good stewards
of the manifold grace of God; 11 if anyone speaks, as the oracles of
God; if anyone ministers, as by strength which God supplies; in order
that in all things God may be glorified through Jesus Christ, whose
is the glory and the might unto the ages of the ages: Amen.
12
Beloved, do not be surprised at the fiery trial happening among you
to try you, as if a surprising thing is occurring to you, 13 but
rejoice as you share the sufferings of Christ, in order that you may
rejoice exulting at the revelation of his glory. 14 If you are
reproached in the name of Christ, you are blessed, because the glory
and the spirit of God rest on you. 15 Do not let anyone of you suffer
as a murderer or a thief or an evildoer or as a prier into other
men's affairs; 16 but if as a Christian, do not let him be shamed,
but let him glorify God by this name. 17 Because it is the time to
begin the judgment from the household of God; and if firstly from us,
what will be the end of those who disobey the gospel of God? 18 And
if the righteous man is scarcely saved, where will the impious and
sinner appear? 19 So indeed as ones who suffer according to the will
of God let them commit their souls to a faithful Creator in
well-doing.
Chapter
5
I
the co-elder and witness of the sufferings of Christ, also the sharer
of the glory that is about to be revealed, therefore exhort the
elders among you: 2 shepherd the flock of God among you, not by way
of compulsion but willingly according to God, nor from eagerness for
base gain but eagerly, 3 nor as exercising lordship over your
allotted people but becoming examples of the flock; 4 and when the
chief shepherd appears you will receive the unfading crown of glory.
5 Likewise, younger men, submit yourselves to older men, and all of
you
gird on humility toward one another, because God resists arrogant
men, but to humble men he gives grace.
6 Therefore be humbled
under the mighty hand of God, in order that he may exalt you in time,
7 casting all of your anxiety on him, because it matters to him
concerning you. 8 Be sober, watchful. Your adversary the devil
walks about like a roaring lion seeking whom to devour; 9 whom oppose
firmly in faith, knowing the same sufferings are being accomplished
in your brotherhood in the world. 10 Now the God of all grace, the
one who called you to his eternal glory in Christ, who suffered a
little himself, will adjust, confirm, strengthen and found you. 11
His is the might unto the ages of the ages: Amen.
12 Through
Silvanus the faithful brother, as I reckon, I wrote to you by means
of a few words, exhorting and witnessing this to be the true grace of
God, in which you stand. 13 The co-chosen in Babylon and Mark my son
greet you. 14 Greet one another with a kiss of Christian love. Peace
to all you who are in Christ.
